SAVE WOMEN'S LIVES WITH OFFICE SUPPLIES

How do I do that?

Up to half a million women and three million newborn babies die each year in pregnancy and childbirth or soon afterwards. It’s happening mainly in Africa and South Asia and whilst we have a number of community-based groups on the ground, most of the work that’s saving lives is going on right here in the UK. The cost of running our UK office is supporting our work with 5,230 women’s groups reaching almost 200,000 women in Bangladesh, India and Malawi.

What does it cost?

It costs £26 per day to cover our office costs.

When will I see the difference?

When we've raised enough to pay for our office costs for a month (£520).

What will I see?

You’ll see how those boring office costs kept the all important on-the-ground projects going - scroll down the page to "success stories" to see the difference already made.

Tell me more...

Flying backwards and forwards to projects is a pretty expensive business. And when that money’s helping to save lives, you don’t want to be wasting it on airport taxes.

That’s why Women and Children First sets up projects with community based women’s groups in Africa and Asia and then helps local people to improve maternal and newborn health, and sustain the groups, by additional support from a UK base.  It’s more empowering for the communities, and more cost-effective, which means more projects in the long run.

Phone calls and emails all help provide the guidance and advice that the local group leaders need, and all the project administration and finance can be handled with computers in the UK office. The Women and Children First website (and old-fashioned post) is a vital tool to let people know about the work, and to get more people on board to fund it.

Big smiles from the team!

Update: 12th November 2010

Dear Chloe, Elizabeth and Jeremy,

Twenty-thousand more women are learning to save lives

Thanks to your support, the team at Women and Children First (Cassie, Alex, Ruth, Caroline and Ros - above) have kept in close touch and provided advice to their projects in India, Bangladesh and Malawi.

Since the film was made, Women and Children First have launched a new project in Malawi which will establish 144 women’s groups and supported another Malawi project to set up 202 new groups!

That means over 20,000 women will learn about how to keep themselves safe during pregnancy and childbirth and how to ensure their newborn babies will survive the precarious early days of life, women such as Abigail here, with baby Grace.

Regular phone calls and emails have been vital in helping these mums and babies.  See how happy the team are now!

This project is still ongoing, so please spread the word, “like” the project on facebook and tell your friends and I’ll show you more of the difference that we’re making together.

Kind Regards,

Ruth,

Women and Children First UK
