Reversing childhood cataracts in Bangladesh
JOB DONE: SCROLL DOWN TO "SUCCESS STORIES" TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE MADE Every minute, somewhere in the world, a child goes blind. But that doesn’t have to be the end of the story. Cataracts in children can be reversed with a simple operation, restoring their sight. But it’s important that we reach the children in time, because after a certain age, the brain can no longer learn to see. Sightsavers' Bangladesh Childhood Cataract Campaign is a one of a kind national programme specifically targeting childhood cataract. We’ve pledged to restore sight to 10,000 children. It’s an enormous project – we need to find each of the children that can be treated, and get them to a specialist, so he or she can evaluate their sight, before performing the operation to reverse the blindness. You've done it......scroll down the page to "success stories" to see the difference already made. A successful operation!
The smiling face you can see above belongs to Shahinur, who is recovering from a successful operation to her left eye. We received her photo and story from Helen at SightSavers headquarters and wanted to share the good news with you as soon as possible. The operation was made possible due to your support to the SightSavers project, as Helen explains... "So far the generous support we have received from See The Difference supporters has helped us to fund this and other child cataract operations. Shahinur Akter, who is 9 had a cataract in her left eye Shahinur comes from a village called Rahinabad in the district of Narshingdi in central Bangladesh. Shahinur hurt her eye, following an accident at home. Her mother said that Shahinur had an accident whilst she was helping with the cooking. They were preparing a cake made with rice for Eid-ul-Adha. Her mother asked her to collect dates from a tree and while doing this, Shahinur fell and hurt her left eye on a thorn from the tree. It was very painful for her and her mother and father took her to a local hospital. Shahinur was then referred to Islamia Hospital which is about two hours travel away from their home. Her mother was really worried as she feared for her daughter’s future. However, they are both happy now that the surgery has been a success. Thank you for your generous donations. Thanks to you Shahinur has a bright future ahead of her." We love receiving feedback like this at See The Difference and we hope you're feeling very proud of yourselves for making such a great story possible.
