JOB DONE: SCROLL DOWN TO 'SUCCESS STORY' FOR MORE

SEND A BOOK TO A TANZANIA SCHOOL

How do I do that?

Books in Tanzania schools are in very short supply - you can help change that by paying to ship a book to them.

What does it cost?

It costs just 50p to ship each book (compared to £11 for the government to buy that book locally).

When will I see the difference?

Scroll down to 'Success Story' to see the difference made.

Tell me more...

There are keen, motivated students sat in their classrooms in Tanzania ready to study. Meanwhile, UK school store rooms are stacked high with technically ‘out of date’ textbooks due to rapid curriculum changes. But algebra is algebra, right? So, READ International are busy collecting, sorting and matching hundreds of thousands of these disused books donated by UK schools, youth groups and individuals to the Tanzanian syllabus. This is where you come in – although READ student volunteers are fundraising around the country they still need your help to fund shipping them all!

Update: 15.12.11

Dear Mike, Nicola, Jas, Lisa and Jill,

We're delighted to let you know that your donations contributed to the distribution of 250,215 books to 342 schools across 13 regions of Tanzania in August this year. The photo below was taken at Tunduru secondary school where we distributed the books you helped us send to Tanzania.

Ahmadi Nyenje (aged 18) pictured second from right, aims to be a District Commissioner on his local government. He is the youngest of his family. He and his sister had the opportunity to go to school but she had to drop out when she became pregnant. His parents died recently and he lives with his elderly grandfather who he has to care for. Daimu Fundi (aged 17), pictured on the left, aspires to be an English teacher. His siblings are all farmers and already have children; he is also the youngest of them.

The books that we have brought to these eager to learn students present a great opportunity for them to unlock their potential and achieve their ambitions, making the seemingly impossible-possible (Their school motto).

A big thanks from Ahmadi, Daimu and all the students at Tunduru Secondary School

Make a difference by giving time at one of our Book Projects

Our Book Projects are entirely student led and are found at 22 locations across the UK - if you are a university student and have enthusiasm, commitment and ideas then why not come on board?

We need student volunteers to help with all aspects of the project:

- Planning and running fundraising events
- Driving vans during our book collections
- Book sorting and boxing
- Press and media - writing articles
- Distributing the books in Tanzania and Uganda!

To find out more about volunteering with READ download our Information Pack. You can find your nearest project by selecting a university on the Book Project homepage.

If you are not a university student but would still like to help out with your local project - you can! You could drive a van during their books collections, run a fundraising event on their behalf, or simply help them spread the word in your local community.

Contact us and use your skills and ideas to make a difference!
