Outsmarting the floods
TRAIN A FAMILY TO BE FLOOD WARDENSHow do I do that?Every year, thousands of families in Nepal are devastated by monsoons as rising floodwaters leave them stranded and homeless. And it’s the poorest people that are hit first and hardest, as they are forced to live on riverside land that no one else wants. However with our simple Early Warning System these people have the opportunity to outsmart the floods. What does it cost?£19 will allow us to equip and train another family in the Early Warning System. When will I see the difference? When we've raised enough to protect 50 families from floods (£950). What will I see?Our Early Warning Team will send photos to show you some of the families you have helped.
Tell me more...The districts of Banke, Bardia, Chitwan and Nawalparasi are amongst the most flood-prone in Nepal. Practical Action is working with these communities to teach them a way to outsmart the floods. The ‘Scaling Up Early Warning Systems in Nepal’ project began in June 2009 and builds on previous work within the region. Success depends on families taking ownership of their Early Warning Systems, which include thermometers and flood gauges to monitor weather change. Information is then spread through the community network using hand sirens, each with a range of around 1km. Clearly marked and publicised evacuation routes, boats and life-jackets can all help villages escape to safer ground before the flood water hits.
