Going the distance
Shinyanga is one of the poorest and most educationally deprived regions in Tanzania. Teachers are often expected to cope with classes of over 100 students, with social customs and economic hardship meaning girls and children with disabilities are frequently excluded from education altogether. Droughts, and the lack of clean water or sanitation in the region, can also cause health problems and irregular attendance amongst pupils. Since 2003, Oxfam has worked closely with the local government to establish a pool of teacher trainers and mentors, who support approximately 2,000 teachers. Focus includes participation-led classes, the promotion of girls and female teachers, resources for children with disabilities and clean water and sanitation for schools. Around 80,000 children stand to benefit from our ongoing education programme. Exam results in the area have already improved by 30%, with twice as many pupils now progressing to secondary school. The project costs us £300,000 a year, and we’d like to raise £10,000 of that through See The Difference.
You'll See The Difference...
We promise to tell you when we have raised all the money we need, and to give you feedback on the teachers and children involved in the project.
