Help the Japanese tsunami aid effort
PROVIDE RESCUE MAPS TO AID WORKERS IN JAPAN JOB DONE: SCROLL DOWN FOR TWO UPDATES FROM JAPAN How did you do that?MapAction geographical specialists were working with aid organisations in Japan, and based in the JICA offices in west-central Tokyo. They were drawing up new maps of the area post earthquake/tsunami, to enable aid workers to make their way through the devastation as fast as possible. This appeal raised enough to cover the costs of the map printing, and MapAction also recouped the flight costs of the first two volunteers, and banked the remaining funds for future emergency MapAction deployments. What did it cost? The first £2,100 went towards map printing, and subsequent money was allocated to flights and a reserve fund for future deployments. When did you see the difference?Updates were received during the deployment from MapAction's Chief Executive, Nigel Woof, and then MapAction's ground team reported back as soon as the crisis had settled. Scroll down the page to "success stories" to get the updates.
Tell me more…In the wake of a disaster, the damage to roads, coastlines, buildings and bridges can make existing maps redundant. The efforts of the UN, Red Cross and other humanitarian aid organisations can be delayed by out-of-date information. MapAction deploys teams of geographical experts the minute disaster breaks. The draw up new maps on a daily basis, showing aid organisations where people are most in need. The first maps may even be drawn up in the air, en-route to the emergency, so they're ready to print and distribute as soon as the team lands. Project Update: 17th March 2011Thank you to everyone who is supporting MapAction's work in Japan. This is a phone call from MapAction Chief Executive Nigel Woof. Final Update: 1st April 2011Nick McWilliam is a Geographic Information Systems specialist, who volunteers for MapAction when he is not teaching or performing research at university. On 14th March, he was deployed to Japan, along with another volunteer, to help with the relief effort. See The Difference donors funded all the maps produced during the MapAction Japan effort, and paid for Nick's flight. Once Nick returned to the UK, he phoned us to tell us about the work MapAction had achieved with your help. In addition, he says, many of the local Japanese aid teams were particularly interested in the MapAction methods of emergency mapping, and they even managed to hold a workshop to pass on some of their skills and knowledge before they left! |
