Introduce disabled people to their communities
JOB DONE: SCROLL DOWN TO 'SUCCESS STORY' TO FIND OUT MOREINTRODUCE DISABLED PEOPLE TO THEIR COMMUNITIESHow do I do that? All too often, and for many reasons, disabled people just fall through the cracks of society - out of reach of social workers, health professionals and even their peers. Livability’s Lifestyle Choices team works with over 150 disabled people on a one-to-one basis to help them get out into the community and take part in everyday activities - everything from sailing and swimming to IT courses and archery. What does it cost?£16 will pay for a disabled person to enjoy a one-to-one session and get out into the community. When will I see the difference?Scroll down to 'success story' to see the difference made
Tell me more...Our Lifestyle Choices project workers work as mentors, and the way we work is tailored to the individual. We’ll take the time to discuss the hobbies or courses that the service user would like to get involved in, before using our network of knowledge and contacts to connect them with each chosen activity. We can even accompany them if they’re worried about going alone. By getting involved in new activities, service users gain newfound confidence and independence, and become more involved in the community that they live in.
Dear Chris, Sebastian, Jill and Colin NIGEL'S STORY
“Hi, I’m Nigel and I’ve cerebral palsy. Above is a photo of myself and Garry, my key worker, in my local supermarket. I used to hate going there. I just felt that everyone was looking at me and I wasn’t very good at asking for help – I was too embarrassed. But Garry gave me the confidence to get out of my flat and just talk to people, rather than being a shrinking violet. It’s just like having a friend there who can help you out when you need them. I also have a great hobby. I love horses and I wanted to ride, but my balance wasn’t good enough, so Garry suggested I try carriage driving instead. I found sitting in the carriages holding the reins gave me a sense of being in control that I hadn’t felt for a long time. Thanks to Garry and Livability I can go wherever I want. In short, I’m just living my life!” “My name is Kayleigh, I’m 22 and I have cerebral palsy which affects my legs and hands. I use an electric wheelchair outdoors, but at home I crawl on my hands and knees. I go to University, but I find it to hard to keep up with taking notes. Because of my wheelchair and lack of confidence, I haven’t really been able to make any friends. However Lifestyle Choices is AWESOME!!!! |
