HELP A YOUNG PERSON INTO UNIVERSITY

How do I do that?

There are many young people in this country for whom going to university does not seem to be a real possibility. There may be no one in the family who has gone to university before, and the family may not understand the university system or know how to help their child achieve their full potential. By supporting IntoUniversity, you can enable us to train an undergraduate student to mentor a young person. Mentoring pairs meet twice a month to engage in activities that help the mentee with their studie, boost their confidence and social skills and explore their future plans. This gives a young person the chance to raise their aspirations and to get crucial support that they would otherwise not have.

What will it cost?

£10 will pay to set up a student with a mentor, who will support the student for up to a year.

When will I see the difference?

When we've raised enough for 100 student mentor sessions (100 x £10 = £1,000).

What will I see?

The best way to show you would be to hear from some of our Mentors and Mentees! Scroll down the page to "success stories" to see the difference already made...

Tell me more...

The work we do at IntoUniversity gives young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the support that those from wealthier families recieve as a matter of course. Our mentors are there for young people who have shown their dedication to our academic support sessions, who want to work hard and achieve their goals in life but need extra support to help them get there. Mentoring partnerships go beyond students getting help with their studies: the activities they engage in together might include cooking, playing board games, writing an article for the mentoring magazine or taking part in a group trip to a university. Mentees get the chance to speak to a student about university, what to expect and how they can achieve a place there. Through this, they can build greater confidence and self-belief, and are set on the way to getting to where they want to be in life.

Gaining a degree is more important than ever in the UK. We want to esure that young people have the same opportunities no matter what their background, and with more mentors we can give more young people the one-to-one support that makes such a difference.

Thank you Balvinder, Clare and Liz

We received this thank you note and photo from Radia (Mentee) and Kathryn (Mentor), who you helped this summer, making a cake together. Radia is 12 years old and in Year 8. She is interested in studying Law and being a solicitor or barrister. Her mentor Kathryn studies Economics and Business with Eastern European Studies at UCL.

We hope this gives you a little insight into the difference your support makes and how much it means to Radia and Kat. It’s all about supporting young people to make the leap to uni.

So a big thank-you and please do share the difference you made and spread the word about Into University, you can do it using the buttons on the right.

Take care,

Gemma & The IntoUniversity Team.

Update: 04/04/2012

Dear Serge, Rachael, Pippa, Mr H A Mitchell, Mr G B Dancer, Sophie, Jill, Jas, Angus, Neil, Dom, Helen and Mr M Merrill,

Thank you for supporting IntoUniversity, we thought we would let you know what has been going on recently and introduce you to a mentee who you’ve supported and his mentor.

Charles is a mentee on our Cambridge Mentoring Scheme and is studying Law at St Catharine's College, Cambridge. He wrote this letter to IntoUniversity to let us know how well his mentor partnership with James has worked out:

'I feel like I should inform you that James has been a massive help to me! He's given me such great advice and has really helped me to settle into the previously unknown world of university life. He's helped me to organise myself, given me study tips and ensured that I was properly settled into college life. It's been so good to have somebody to talk when I have any fears about anything and I think that it is incredibly useful to get advice from him on what I should do. Without him, I don't know where I would be in life. When he came into my life, it was like a light switch being flipped in a dark room. He's even taken his time out to talk to me about future careers and has given me tons of advice on applications to investment banks for spring programmes. I honestly think that he has changed my life.'

James, Charles' mentor, had this to say:

'It is great to hear that Charles appreciates me as a mentor, however I have to say that it has been a pleasure and a privilege to guide someone so kind, caring and thoughtful through their first six months of University. Charles and I have a very good friendship that makes it much easier for us to communicate and be honest with each other - a cornerstone of any strong mentor/mentee relationship. Not only have I helped Charles, but he has also helped me:helped me realise that it is important to give back, important to be considerate but also important to ensure that others learn from your own experiences. I am sure that I will continue to be friends with Charles long after this scheme is done - I hope to help Charles with the decisions he continues to make throughout his university life, and beyond. I cannot praise enough the IntoUniversity scheme and the connections they help create.'
