About the charity

Hope is a child rights charity working in Calcutta where over 250,000 children are forced to exist on the streets, and one third of the population live in slums. The streets offer little protection, leaving the children vulnerable to dangerous predators and with little chance of a decent future. For the past ten years Hope has invested time and resources into making a fundamental and sustainable change to the lives of these young people and their families.

Our goal is to give children back their childhoods so they thrive and can graduate to adulthood with a good education, employable skills and a sense of self-worth. Hope works with 16 local Indian NGOs to run over 60 projects, all based in the streets and slums.

Our coaching centres provide educational support so children remain in school, instead of dropping out due to lack of materials, uniform or food.  We also run a vocational training centre for at risk young women.

Street children find it almost impossible to get access to healthcare - our mobile clinics and the Hope hospital provide both treatment and health awareness.

Many of these children have been physically and physiologically abused. Our protection homes offer a haven including access to education, counselling and love and support from our dedicated staff.

As well as these front line projects, Hope has created innovative approaches to tackling complex cultural issues, such as child labour and child trafficking.

In its first 10 years Hope has helped over 100,000 people. Most of the children we help are now in full time education. Some of the older ones have gone on to higher education, whilst others have found decent jobs including working to help others like them. Thousands more have had life-saving medical intervention.

Above all, Hope helps people to help themselves.
