Turn food waste into a hearty meal
TURN FOOD WASTE INTO A HEARTY MEALHow do I do that?Foodcycle collect good quality, usable food surplus from supermarkets and their volunteers turn it into tasty fare - you can pay for a socially excluded person to enjoy one of these delicious meals. What does it cost?It costs just £1.50 to produce a hearty, healthy three course meal. When will I see the difference? As soon as we’ve raised enough for 1,000 scrummy meals. What will I see? You’ll meet some of the people your donations helped.
Tell me more...The FoodCycle Kings Cross Hub serves up hot and hearty, three-course meals for people in need in the community. Every Sunday, good quality, usable surplus food is collected from supermarkets in the area, and transported to a nearby community centre, where it’s cooked up into healthy fresh dishes, full of fruit, vegetables and nutrients. FoodCycle then provide this food, free of charge, to a local community organisation. Which means that the people that go there for support and advice can also improve their overall wellbeing and nutrition (as well as enjoy the tasty dishes!) The Kings Cross project is hoping to serve up 3,000 meals, reclaim 1,500kg of food and provide 60 volunteer opportunities for young people this year. And because most of the ingredients, the venue and the volunteers’ time are all donated, FoodCycle can make such a massive impact for a tiny amount of cash. As anyone’s who’s held a dinner party knows, putting an exact price on cooking is tricky, but they estimate that the extra ingredients, venue overheads (gas, electricity and waste removal), volunteer training and expenses, kitchen equipment, bicycles and trailers to transport the food, marketing materials, insurance, accountancy and monitoring and evaluation costs add up to… about £1.50 a meal! And if it’s more than that, they’ll make up the difference. |
