Plant new elms in the UK
PLANT NEW ELMS IN THE UKHow do I do that?Dutch Elm disease wiped out nearly all the native elm trees in the UK, but now with your help - and cuttings taken from the surviving healthy trees - we can plant new elms and restore this once iconic tree back to the British landscape. What does it cost?It costs £20 to plant a tree in a British school. When will I see the difference? When we have planted 100 new elms (100 x £20 = £2000) - and we are over half way there already! What will I see? We'll let you know exactly where your tree has made a difference - scroll down the page to "success stories" to find out where we have already planted trees.
Tell me more...The Great British Elm Experiment hopes to restore this once iconic tree back to the British landscape. Every Summer and Autumn we plants batches of up to 250 trees at a time, with the goal of planting another 6,000 over the coming years in schools across the UK.

Update: July 2011 This Spring, thanks to your support I’m delighted to be able to tell you that nine elm saplings were planted at primary and secondary schools all over the UK – check out the video above to see exactly where your tree has been planted. Thank you for helping us to make a difference to the elm’s future in this way. Several decades ago Dutch elm disease wiped out over 25 million trees in the UK; the Conservation Foundation is attempting to unlock the mystery of why some trees survived. The elm saplings that have been sent out to schools, thanks to your donations, have been grown from cuttings taken from healthy mature trees which appear to have resisted Dutch elm disease for over 60 years. You’ll be able to locate your elm(s) and find out its parent tree as soon as the school has registered it on the elm map on our website – accessed via the elm logo at www.conservationfoundation.co.uk. Then, all being well, you can watch their development over the years. As well as watering and pruning their tree, pupils will record its progress every six months. They’ll also be learning about the importance of the elm to our heritage and biodiversity. The support you have provided means that this project can continue to grow and any help you can give us in spreading the word even further by liking us on facebook and adding our project to your profile would be greatly appreciated. Thank you once again for your support. David Shreeve Co-founder and Director, The Conservation Foundation
