Screen reading software for the blind

GIVE A BLIND PERSON ACCESS TO THE INTERNET

How do I do that?

Thunder is award-winning free screenreader talking software for people with little or no sight - to ensure it remains a valuable resource to visually impaired people it needs to be constantly developed and updated - you can help make that happen.

What does it cost?

With a minimum 30,000 new downloads a year, the cost of updating and developing Thunder works out at just 75p per user. (The minimum donation is £1.00, so with gift aid added you can make a difference to two blind people.)

When will I see the difference?

When we've raised enough for a thousand downloads (1000 x £0.75 = £750).

What will I see?

You’ll hear from some of the users and they’ll tell you how thunder has empowered them. Scroll down the page to "success stories" to see the difference already made...

Tell me more...

As Roger and Margaret (and their guide dog Tania) explain in the video, being able to use the Internet is a life-changing experience. Just think about how much you take it for granted - whether we use it for email (we send around 250 billion emails a day apparently), looking up information or just telling everyone what we had for lunch, it plays a big part in the world we live in. Basically, the Internet is brilliant, isn't it?

Although the software is free to download, with ever changing technology Thunder needs constantly developing and updating. Not being able to get online for a week, or a day (or an hour for some people) would cause many of us to royally freak out - so imagine the difference it makes for you to get someone online who has never had that opportunity before - you're turning isolation into independence.

Project Update: 12th November 2010

Dear Jill, Rachel, Roger, Michael and Mike,

Thanks to you, we’ve been able to support another 60 downloads of the Screenreader software for blind people. Your help makes a real difference and we wanted to show you some of the people who’ve benefited here in the UK and from further afield:

Dear Screenreader

Congratulations and thanks for your the new thunder software. I shall certainly try out your new software as soon as I can find the time to do so. Do keep up with the good work and I’m sure that i am speaking for many blind people when I say that your services are greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Alfred Ho.

Hi Roger and Margaret

Thanks for Thunder. The students at the college I work at are not able to pay the vast sums required for commercial screen readers so anything free which does the same job is definitely of interest to them.

Best Wishes

Tutor/coordinator for blind and visually impaired students at Leeds City College.

Can I just say even before I look at the new version thank you.

Thank you so much as a lot of our blind and partially sighted users have got a great deal out of using it, and it's free you don't get many things like that.

So thanks once again.

Day Support and Assessment Service

Dear Sir/Madam

I'm writing from Andhra Pradesh, India.

I'm a totally blind and find the English Thunder a lifeline.  I request you kindly to consider the possibility of adding support for Telugu language, thereby enabling thousands of blind people access the PC to read books and magazines online and also to work on par with their sighted colleagues.

Thanking you in anticipation.
