Keep kids safe from trafficking
JOB DONE - SCROLL DOWN TO 'SUCCESS STORY' FOR MORE
KEEP KIDS SAFE FROM TRAFFICKINGHow do I do that?Moldova is Europe's poorest country and adults often have to go abroad to find work - leaving their children behind and at risk of trafficking, At the Iargara Centre kids can drop in, take part in activities, get fed and generally keep safe and off the streets. What does it cost?£1 will pay for a meal for a child at the Iargara Centre. When will I see the difference?Scroll down to 'Success Story' to see the difference made
Tell me more...Locked between Romania and the Ukraine, Moldova is the poorest country in Europe. Many of the adults earn less than £300 each year and are forced to head elsewhere in search of work. Unfortunately they often have to leave their children behind. Abandoned children are prime targets for trafficking, child labour and crime. They’re easy pickings, out on the streets with no one around to protect them. Luckily there is a way to keep them safe. The Iargara Centre sees around 200 children a week, when they drop in to get help with study and homework, take part in activities or games, or simply get a meal (in fact, some of them visit us every day for food).
Update: 25/11/11
Dear Tim, Wladyslaw, Jeremy, Jas, Fran, Jill and Amy, Since you gave through See The Difference, we have seen some incredible change in Moldova. We wanted to let you literally see the difference that you have made by giving you some highlights of our work, showing you exactly what you have contributed to! Where we work in Moldova, employment levels are low and poverty levels are high. A third of parents have to search abroad for work, leaving their children vulnerable. For those parents who remain, alcohol abuse is common and many children face a home life where they are neglected and abused. This pushes many children into a negative downward spiral that starts with dropping out of school and leads to petty crime. Without an education these children are made increasingly vulnerable to exploitation and trafficking. Our Child and Community Centre works in a small rural village in Moldova to prevent children from falling into this spiral. Each day, the centre provides children with a hot meal, computer classes, homework, help, football and basketball as well as ensuring there are always staff on hand to talk to. Through this we have seen an incredible impact. Before the Centre was open, seven children in the village had police records, sixteen children had dropped out of school and nine children were kept out of school by their parents. The Centre has given children with police records a focus and engaged them in positive activities. It has run after school homework classes to support children to stay in school and excel in their work. Staff have visited homes where children are kept from school to talk with parents and to engage the children in play sessions so they can learn to integrate again. Because of this work, there are now no children with police records, no children dropping out of education, and eight out of the nine children kept at home regularly to attend school. This is the difference you have made. We're glad you can see it. Kind regards, Ben, Esther and the team at Children On The Edge |
