GIVE A DISABLED CHILD A PHYSIO SESSION

How do I do that?

By paying for Liz, our junior physiotherapist, to assess and develop home based exercise programmes for children who attend Brainwave.

What does it cost?

It costs £12 (including employers on-costs) to pay for an hour of Liz's time.

When will I see the difference?

When we've raised enough for 50 hours of Liz's time (50 x £12 = £600).

What will I see?

Liz will update you on what's she's achieved as a result of your support - if you scroll down the page to "success stories", you can see what she's already achieved...

Tell me more...

Brainwave has been going since 1982 and is a charity that works with families to deliver individual home based therapy and exercise programmes that help children with disabilities and development delay to achieve their potential. The children we see have a range of conditions including Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome and Autism. An estimated 20,000 children a year in the UK are born with some level of brain impairment and over 90% of disabled children live at home and yet only 1 in 3 families receive support from their local services.

Liz's typical day starts with talking to the parents about any changes with the child since their last visit or more detail about the child’s medical condition if it’s their initial visit.  She then feeds back to the other therapist she works with and they start the assessment. This involves a observing them in play and seeing what they can achieve for themselves. They then formulate a programme to help aid their natural development and show the parents how to complete the programme with their child, which they carry it out at home.

Liz and the team can make some sort of difference, albeit sometimes small, to most children who attend our programmes. But it can make a huge difference to the independence of that child. Outcomes can be anything from getting a child to feed itself or walk to recognising numbers or forming sentences.

Liz sees around 100 children a year at the centre, most from the South East of England but some from further afield. In addition to an Initial Assessment, many children come back every few months for Reassessments.

Thank you!

Update posted 6th September.

Hear from Liz how you've made a difference!

Liz, a junior physiotherapist at the Brainwave centre in Essex, took some time to talk about one of the children she's helped thanks to your support. She also kindly let us take a peek into her diary, to give you an idea of a what a few days work involves at the centre.

She'll be back at Christmas to tell you more about how she's getting on, so you'll be able to see how your continued support is really helping.

If you'd like to share this story with friends, just use the handy buttons at the top of the page. If you'd like to visit the original project and support Liz some more, you can find it here.

Transcript of diary pages:

16th August 2010

Started the day finishing off a report. Found out how today’s child has been getting on and any changes. She has made some lovely improvements and is starting school soon so programme needs to include activities to help her in this area. Certificate given for improved balance.

17th  - 18th August 2010

I saw an Initial Assessment with Claire the OT (occupational therapist) today & yesterday. The 1st day was mainly spent observing him & encouraging him to participate in activities to allow us to assess his skills. We then explained what we saw to his parents. The second day we showed his parents how to complete the exercises when they got home.

19th August 2010

I had to ring a new family today to explain about the charity and find out whether we were suitable. Then had reassessment booked in with Claire. The little boy has had a big growth spurt so needed to carry on with similar exercises to maintain his body strength.

20th August 2010

Caught up with reports in the morning & helped Gosia (PT) with her family. Had a visit from Olly Murs this afternoon! Great to see all the families at the centre but was very hectic!
