Tell me more...Milika Mwila is the third born in a family of four – two boys and two girls. After both her parents died from HIV related illnesses, she found herself languishing at home when most children her age would be in school. When Milika heard about the Beautiful Gate School being opened in her area (Robert Shanty compound, Kitwe, Zambia), she just woke-up one morning and joined her friends on their way to school. “What are you doing here?” teacher Ivy demanded upon noticing a strange face. “I’ve come to learn,” Milika smiled, “I want to be a teacher when I complete school,” she declares confidently. “Because once I become a teacher, I would be able to help fellow kids who may be in a similar situation as I achieve their lifetime ambitions.” This is Milika’s story, but our Education Development Programme provides education for 400 orphans identified by our outreach workers or referred to the school by social workers or other NGOs. The children are all between six and twelve years old and we make sure they have at least one nutritious meal a day and give them uniforms and school materials so they can complete their studies. We also provide family support and HIV/AIDS awareness to help with personal growth and any trauma that they may have suffered.
UPDATE: 7TH JULY 2011 Dear Philippa, Alice, Dom, Francesca, Gabriel, Jas, John, L Williams, Lisa, Mrs Kim, Louise, Gillian, Miss Shuttleworth, Edward, Mr Foad, Peggy, Sam and Xiaoyan... ...you took up the challenge to educate 10 children at the Beautiful Gate school in Robert shanty compound, Zambia - and we are now delighted to introduce you to the children you've helped: ABRAM LOMBE7 year old Abram Lombe is quite athletic, just like his late parents. While his father played football, his mother was a keen netball player. His grandparents always complain that he spends most of his time at the football ground even skipping his meals at times.
CAREN CHISALABAThe cheerful girl in the colourful attire is Caren. She is so excited to be in school as demonstrated by her smile. Whenever her grandmother walks her up to the gate of the school each school day, this 7 year old simply waves her goodbye and scurries away to her new class room.
CASEY MUMBACasey is a 7 year old boy with a serious demeanour. Both of his parents are deceased and he now lives with his grandmother – she brews illicit liquor (kachasu) in Robert shanty compound to raise money to support her family. Apart from Casey, the 62 year old grandmother is struggling to support 7 other grandchildren whose parents have also died.
CLARISA CHILESHEClarisa would strike you as a shy and timid girl but she isn’t... when she’s in the company of friends, she’ll make sure her voice is heard despite her petite structure. Although her parents are both alive she is classed as a vulnerable child. Both her parents are jobless, they survive by doing odd jobs around the community such as cleaning peoples’ yards and doing laundry... anything that provides enough to feed the family.
DELIA BANDADelia towers above the rest of her classmates so you could mistake her for being in a wrong class but this is actually her first year in school. At 10, Delia is the oldest pupil in her class. Her mother “escaped” with her from an abusive relationship and settled in Robert compound. With a school close by, her mother couldn’t wait to finally get her daughter educated; apparently, her father didn’t want her to go school because he was “preserving” her for marriage so that he could make money out of her.
IZUKANJI SIMWANZAIzukanji has never known her parents; they both died of HIV/AIDS when she was still a baby. She now lives with her grandmother, a 69 year old lady. Although her grandmother has never seen the inside of a classroom herself, she is eager to see to it that her 7 year old grandchild is educated.
JOSEPH CHUNGAJoseph is one of the smallest kids in his class but he always makes sure his voice is heard –in short, he’s loud! Cross his path and he’ll be quick to give you that serious look of a policeman. This 7 year old lives with a single mother; his father ran away to live with another woman in a different township.
NATASHA PHIRIAttention… Constable Natasha Phiri reporting! Believe it or not, this 7 year old with a serious look on her face wants to be a police officer when she completes school. Why? Well like father, like daughter – her late father used to be a policeman and this is what she desires to be.
QUEEN NACHANGWEQueen, just as her name suggests, has the face of a princess. Her mother is one of several women who can be seen walking around the township with gigantic bundles balanced on their heads trying to sell vegetables – this is what she has to do each day to find food for the family…..and most importantly, her 7 year old princess. WENDY CHISABALAWendy is 10 years old. The fact that she shares the same class as her 7 year old sibling, Caren, doesn’t put her off. While her sister has to be walked to school by their grandmother each school day, Wendy refuses any escort. When its time for school, she just gets a quick shower and dashes off before anyone can stop her. The parents of these cheerful girls both died of AIDS and they are now being looked after by their grandmother. A massive thank you from all the children - you have made an enormous difference to their lives. Bill Kapinga, Executive Director - Beautiful Gate, Zambia |
