JOB DONE: SCROLL DOWN TO "SUCCESS STORIES" TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE MADE

Second To Nun

You've just seen how this time, sisters are doing it for themselves. Far from spending her life in the confines of an abbey in silent prayer, or making cakes to sell to passing tourists, Sister Concepta works with around 500 people in an area on the borders of Columbo. She teaches, she counsels, she holds cultural events - she's a hero in a habit.

Sister Acts Now!

But Sister Concepta couldn't do all this on her own - she needed your help to build a new centre to give them the space to help another 2,500 people, along with around 120 families affected by the 2004 tsunami.

The building project will cost around £15,000 - but the first £4,000 you helped raise has allowed Sister Concepta’s team of equally kick-ass builders to draw up plans and lay the foundations of the building.

You've done it!

Success Stories

UPDATE: 14TH JUNE 2011

Dear Dom, Jas, Karen, Miss Maxwell, Philippa, Rachel, Russ, Mr Carrick, Mrs Whitehead, Nicola and Vince

SUPER SISTER CONCEPTA HAS STARTED!

I’m Radhika from the Asha Trust and I was out in Sri Lanka recently to see the progress Sister Concepta is making with your support.

You can be one of the first to see the laying of the foundation stone of the new building (see below), the next major step towards establishing a purpose-built community centre in the heart of Athidiya. So a huge thank you from Sister Concepta and us for helping make that happen.

Radhika, Sister, Mrs V Chintaka (the architect), Anukshie, as well as Chris & Alison Aston from Forest Gate helping lay the foundation stone.

We now also have full plans for the Centre. The building will be flexible, with multiuse spaces and sliding/folding partitions to allow for a wide range of activities. The ground floor will be designed with special needs children in mind – there are some 30 children with disabilities in the area, and there are no services nearby. The first floor will have offices, a counselling room and a large meeting room for the after school classes and training.

Your help has enabled us to get started on constructing the shell and the ground floor. Keep an eye out for our next project on See The Difference.

Thanks for all your support

Radhika & Sister Concepta
