PLANT A TREE AND SAVE AN ORANGUTAN

How do I do that?

Sumatran Orangutan Society work with local communities living on the edge of the Leuser Forests in Sumatra. We help create tree nurseries with fruiting and hardwood seedlings in order to provide sustainable livelihoods for communities surrounding critical orangutan habitat. Communities therefore no longer need to rely on collecting wood and other forest products for an income. We have over a thousand hectares of forest that we want to replant, and each hectare needs over a thousand trees.

What does it cost?

It costs just £1 to plant a tree in the Sumatran rainforest.

When will I see the difference?

In the New Year we’ll tell you about our planting plans for 2012. Scroll down the page to 'success story' to see the difference already made.

What will I see?

We’ll show you where the trees will be planted. You can see the difference already made by scrolling down to 'success story'.

Tell me more...

It’s not just Orangutans that need rainforests. Elephants, tigers, butterflies, frogs...even humans depend on the land to survive, but 80% of this habitat has been destroyed over the last 20 years.

We have established a number of nursery and replanting sites in Aceh and North Sumatra and have now planted over 570,000 seedlings. We work in the deforested regions around and within the Leuser Ecosystem, the most important remaining habitat for the Sumatran orangutan.

Success Stories

Thanks to you we've planted 500 trees!

UPDATE: 12th July 2011

Dear Francesc, Lisa, Sam, Jill Ross, Joan, Dom, Rhona, Roisin, Edward, Aimie, Patricia, Vicky and Jill Curson

Thanks to you we've raised enough to plant 500 trees in the Gunung Leuser National Park in Sumatra and with the restoration of the forest we've started to see the return of a range of wildlife - from elephants to leopard cats. Click on the video above to see just what a difference you've made!

With so much of the forest destroyed due to illegal deforestation we've still got a lot of trees to plant so would really appreciate your help in spreading the word about this project.

Thanks again for your support.

Helen Buckland, UK Director - Sumatran Orangutan Society
