Enchanting Welsh meadows
JOB DONE: AWAITING FEEDBACKSAVE WELSH GRASSLANDS AND HELP DISADVANTAGED PEOPLEHow do I do that?In 2005, The Grasslands Trust began an ambitious conservation project at Carmel National Nature Reserve (NNR) working with BTCV volunteers (a conservation volunteering organisation) many of whom were suffering from social exclusion. Carmel lies in the one of the most deprived areas of Wales, where 40% of the population are unemployed or suffering economic hardship. Our vision is to make sure the conservation work we do at Carmel NNR not only benefits the wildlife, but also brings about life-changing opportunities for disadvantaged people living in the area, through volunteering and regular work experience. What does it cost?£45 will pay for tools, equipment, training and supervision for a day of volunteering at Carmel. When will I see the difference? The Grasslands Trust are now putting together the feedback to show you the difference your money has made so we'll be bringing you another 'success story' very soon!
Tell me more...This project has already helped over 200 disadvantaged people, many under the age of 30. Many of our volunteers are long-term unemployed, suffering from addiction or they’ve been in trouble with the police, some come unwillingly. However, once they are able to see the impact they’re making on the landscape as well as learning new (and industry recognised) skills such as chainsawing or brushcutting, and working regularly as part of a team their confidence grows, as does their commitment and self-esteem. Work is carried out weekly throughout the year, regardless of the weather. The volunteers have restored areas of grassland and vital wildlife habitat. Now wildlife is returning to this amazing area of countryside and it is being enjoyed and appreciated by visitors and locals alike.
